I en studie publicerad i Nature Photonics rapporterar forskargruppen att de lyckats skapa en kombination av ultrakorta laserpulser, extrem toppeffekt och exakt styrda v\u00e5gformer som g\u00f6r det m\u00f6jligt att utforska naturens allra snabbaste processer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Det specialbyggda lasersystemet, Light Wave Synthesizer 100 (LWS100), \u00e4r hela 11 meter l\u00e5ngt och 1,5 meter brett \u2013 betydligt st\u00f6rre \u00e4n m\u00e5nga kommersiella lasrar, som i storlek snarare kan j\u00e4mf\u00f6ras med en penna eller en bok. Storleken \u00e4r n\u00f6dv\u00e4ndig f\u00f6r att generera och f\u00f6rst\u00e4rka ultrakorta laserpulser till extrem toppeffekt. Som mest genererar den 100 terawatt \u2013 motsvarande fem g\u00e5nger den genomsnittliga energif\u00f6rbrukningen i v\u00e4rlden \u2013 men bara under n\u00e5gra miljondelar av en miljarddels sekund. Detta g\u00f6r den till Sveriges mest kraftfulla laser och banar v\u00e4g f\u00f6r nya till\u00e4mpningar, allt fr\u00e5n att f\u00f6rst\u00e5 ultrasnabba processer i biomolekyler till att utveckla ljusdriven elektronik och effektivare solpaneler.<\/p>\n<p>Det som utm\u00e4rker systemet \u00e4r att pulserna inte bara \u00e4r extremt korta (4,3 femtosekunder) och kraftfulla \u2013 de har ocks\u00e5 en reproducerbar och styrd elektrisk f\u00e4ltv\u00e5gform som \u00e4r identisk fr\u00e5n puls till puls. Att uppn\u00e5 den h\u00e4r niv\u00e5n av kontroll \u00e4r s\u00e4rskilt utmanande i storskaliga lasersystem, men avg\u00f6rande f\u00f6r m\u00e5nga avancerade till\u00e4mpningar. Tekniken kan ge upphov till \u00e4nnu kortare attosekundpulser i r\u00f6ntgenomr\u00e5det som kan anv\u00e4ndas f\u00f6r att &#8220;filma&#8221; elektronernas r\u00f6relser i realtid. <\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Vi kan nu visa att systemet levererar precis det vi s\u00e5g framf\u00f6r oss n\u00e4r det byggdes. Det \u00e4r en milstolpe f\u00f6r v\u00e5r forskning, s\u00e4ger L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Veisz, professor vid Ume\u00e5 universitet.<\/p>\n<p>En rad olika experiment planeras nu att genomf\u00f6ras med lasersystemet d\u00e4r man utnyttjar dess extrema f\u00f6rm\u00e5ga att koncentrera ljuset i b\u00e5de tid och rum. <\/p>\n<p>Genom att forma och fokusera ultrakorta pulser kan forskare exempelvis accelerera elektronknippen med en pulsl\u00e4ngd p\u00e5 n\u00e5gra attosekunder till ultrarelativistiska energier i kompakta mikroacceleratorer, eller skapa n\u00e4sta generations r\u00f6ntgenk\u00e4llor f\u00f6r att driva utvecklingen inom attosekundforskningen.<\/p>\n<p>Lasersystemet installerades och invigdes vid Institutionen f\u00f6r fysik vid Ume\u00e5 universitet 2022.
